Tobacco Cave
Manacor

A place of legend!

Tobacco cave was a place commonly used by smugglers. They would hide their bundles of tobacco or sacks of flour and coffee there which they had brought from Algeria. Smuggling was a kind of illegal trade and way of avoiding tax, bringing goods to Majorca without any legal controls. Smuggling was also known as black market trade or estraperlo in Spanish. This is a word associated with the electronic roulette wheels sold under the Stra-Per-Lo brand name. These were fitted in San Sebastián casino in the Basque country and at Formentor Hotel in Majorca and later prohibited by the police because the game was found to be rigged.
