The Monk Seals' Cave
Deià

A place of legend!

A long time ago, it was common to see monk seals around Majorca’s coasts. These are Mediterranean seals with grey and brown fur that can be up to almost three metres long! With their long tails, the monk seals were said to be a marvellous sight in the sea and more than once they were confused with mermaids due to the elegance with which they swam, so agile and vigorously. They sought shelter on the Tramuntana mountains’ rocky coasts, filled with caves and grottos. Due to man’s greed and ignorance, the species has died out.
