The Virgin's Discovery
Escorca

A place of legend!

According to legend, the statue of the Virgin at Lluc shrine was found by a little shepherd called Lluc. His parents were Saracens and they had died during King James’ conquest of the island. Lluc converted to Christianity and he often helped the priest at Sant Pere Church in Escorca when mass was held. In exchange, the priest held Lluc in high regard because he was a very good child.

One Saturday, Lluc was saying his usual prayers at dusk when he heard the sound of hymns issuing forth from a cloud of white dust that spiralled up in a column from the ground. He ran to the estate house to tell the tenant farmer and messengers there, but they all laughed at him. Even so, Lluc insisted on what he had heard. The old priest from Sant Pere Church went with him and they discovered the statue of the Virgin in the place where the shining column stood. The shrine to Our Lady of Lluc was built right there and it is a holy site, visited each year by thousands of people.
