El Virrei cross was erected in 1645 in memory of viceroy José Pérez de Pomar y Torres de Mendoza who died when he fell from his horse into the moat flanking the city walls. The current cross is a replica since the original is in Bellver Castle Museum. Its location was also changed, because it used to stand closer to Plaça d’Espanya.
