The Critter of Sa Mola

According to legend...

Some called it a dragon and others a critter. It was a terrible beast, with a ferocious mouth, scaly body, sharp claws, and a poisonous tail. It had breath of fire, sulphurous saliva, and an evil petrifying expression. On its back were two bat’s wings. It lived in a cave on Sa Mola peak, a lowish hill on the right hand-side of Sóller as you go down toward the harbour. The critter was speedy and agile and it gobbled down everything that passed close to its lair. That is why everyone kept their distance. The hungry critter got used to eating stones, which filled its stomach with gravel and fury. Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch... It could even be heard gnawing them in Sóller, Biniaraix and Fornalutx. People feared that it would end up by eating all the mountains in the valley. But then Saint George found out and he exclaimed “Enough is enough. Either I kill it or it will kill me!” He set off to Sóller on his white horse...
